War memorials were not simply constructed to focus grief, but often carried a moral message to the future. In bronze or stone, at least, the dead become pensive paragons of service and sacrifice, no longer caked with mud, crawling with lice, or numbed by serial percussive detonations, but hidden beneath sculpted helmets and the stone folds of trench coats. An acceptable narrative was imposed on an experience that defied most imaginations, except those of the men who had been to hell and back.

Though posed in a mine crater as early as June 1916, this photograph gives a good impression of how counterattacking German troops were equipped for the Somme battlefield. Armed with rifles and grenades, most are wearing the 1915-type gas mask. As gas was an unpredictable area weapon, often injuring and debilitating rather than killing outright, swift, effective protection was vital. By mid-1916 gas warfare technology was advancing rapidly, if unevenly: how best to deliver gas was still a live debate, and wind and weather were never entirely overcome.
